Question to Julie
Here are some questions out of the community to Julie:
What board would you recommend for a beginner? and what material? I would recommend a soft top longboard to learn on. It’s more stable and forgiving and easier to catch waves when the waves are small.
Are there any signs that indicate sharks are in the water and that you shouldn’t go in? You should never surf when there is a lot of baitfish in the water. Also, if there is a lifeguard nearby, look for purple flags that indicate dangerous sea life. It’s always safer too to surf when there are other surfers in the water.
What’s your favorite surf spot in Cocoa Beach and why? The Cocoa Beach Pier is always the most crowded when there are waves, but you can surf a lot of uncrowded waves along our coast. Lori Wilson Park is also a good spot but can sometimes be crowded with swimmers in the water during the summer. 16th Street is popular spot, but I just go out at 6th Street South which is close to where I live and it’s usually not crowded.
What makes Cocoa Beach different from other famous surf towns? Despite its location next to a major port and near the Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa Beach still has a small town feel. It’s unique in the sense of its rich history in surfing and is home to the Florida Surfing Museum; not to mention Cocoa Beach is home to the one of the biggest surfers of all time, Kelly Slater.
